“paul wolfowitz, you might wanna skip this post” OR “…so ryan seacrest is an asshole and here’s why…”
walter turned two years old yesterday! we celebrated with fries and sodas.
my call-back in dc went…ok. couldn’t tell. could have been better, but it definitely could have been worse.
was gonna go to ny today for a couple of calls but we overslept. grr! very frustrating. but i had to find the upside…i got to enjoy this beautiful day here in philly with my loves, and saved a tank of expensive gas. i took a bubble bath this morning and read us weekly to take my mind off of things.
jamie cullum was great the other night! we had weird seats, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. and his support act was just as amazing as expected. you gotta check her out…brandi carlile. she’s kinda like a female ray lamontagne. we just got fourth row kathy griffin tickets for her nyc show in early june–that will be fun. i recently reconnected with my friend, amy, on myspace and she’s just as much of a crazed kathy fan as jen, jess, and i are. she, too, knows the "allegedly" dvd word for word. so we’re all gonna go see her! even if you hated kathy on "suddenly susan"–wait…did anyone actually watch "suddenly susan"? didn’t think so. anyway, if you don’t know her stand-up…SHIT. IS. FAWNY.
so you wanna know why i love my neighborhood? places like kaplan’s. it’s this bakery a few blocks from us that’s been there forever, like, 50 years or so, so it’s not at all trendy or hipster-ish (which isn’t always a bad thing, i’m just sayin’). they have great stuff, and they keep their prices low. today i got a freshly sliced large loaf of rye, a big box of assorted bakery cookies, a black and white cookie (i’m addicted to those), two vitamin waters, and two snapples for $14.50! gotta love it. the ladies who work there are so friendly, too, and it always smells yummy at the park next door.
*as i was writing this, i got a myspace friend request. if it’s a band i don’t know, i always deny, because christ i have too many friends on that thing! but i usually at least check out their page first. this band is called "the sassy mo-fo’s", and their first song is, i won’t be dick cheney’s bitch. sample lyrics: i might fondle the tits of paul wolfowitz, but I won’t be dick cheney’s bitch! clearly i added them.*
i think we’re gonna take a drive up to new hope tomorrow. maybe we’ll stop at kaplan’s first for bagels…yums.

i’ve been reconnecting with some old friends lately. when it rains, it pours! and it feels really nice.

so i got my first call-back of the season! and it’s for SHAKESPEARE…i’m very stoked. i went down to the folger theatre (part of the famous folger shakespeare library) in dc on friday to audition for their season, which i thought was "midsummer" and "king lear", but they told me i’m called back for miranda in "the tempest", so i’m confused, but…whatever! it’s actually gonna be a pop/rock musical version of the play, and it’s being directed by a very established philly director, so it will be great for me to be seen by, let alone work with, this guy. call-back is wednesday.
the trip to dc was a bit stressful, but fun. i was running late due to traffic, and i made it there JUST in time. there was another actress waiting who looked vaguely familiar, but i couldn’t place her. when i saw her name on the sign-in sheet, though, i realized that-get this-she was a professor of mine at montclair my first semester. she taught my "intro to theatrical medium" class, which was an extremely unnecessary class for me. she loved me, i think, because i was one of the few who spoke up in class and knew what i was talking about, but i really couldn’t stand her. she’s young, but super prissy and just kind of weird. i knew she was an actress, but it was a trip to be at the same audition with her. i went in right before her and did a helena monologue from "midsummer"-a very popular and somewhat overdone piece, but they are doing the show, so i figured i should do it. then she went in and did the same piece. ha! it was so weird. this sequence of events took place in the span of about 5 minutes, so it was trippy. and i gotta say…not to be mean…i could hear her audition perfectly through the wall…she was not good.
i wanted to take advantage of being in dc, considering how long the drive was, so i decided to take a little sight-seeing drive around the city. don’t ever do this. the traffic was horrendous! i still enjoyed myself, but it took forever to get anywhere. i circled the white house and gave it the finger, and then went on my way.
the next day, saturday, i drove out to lancaster for another audition ("crazy for you"). also hit crazy traffic, but when i got there, had one of the best auditions ever. the director was very funny and extremely complimentary of me. everyone in lancaster is friendly, it seems, as a matter of fact. i stopped to have an early dinner at…drumroll, please…bob evans! and you know what? it was awesome! great service, and love those biscuits! i programmed my navigation system to take me home using the least amount of freeways, and it took me on a really lovely scenic route home. i drove among the amish for a while. seriously, horses and buggies on all sides of me. cows and horses and lots of green. it was so nice. i was hoping to encounter some young amish ruffians out on rumspringa, but no such luck. mose, where are you??
mark and i had a very relaxing yet productive sunday. we had brunch at our favorite place, sam’s morning glory. the wait is long and they’re always crowded, but we never feel rushed at all. all their frittatas are HUGE and come with grits, a giant hunk of biscuit, and yummy stewed apples (which i’m always too full to eat). mark got carrot cake pancakes with cream cheese icing on the side…amazing. the coffee is served in big metal mugs. it’s just really unpretentious and cozy, and my god the food is good. yeah for sam’s. then we did some cleaning and re-organizing, and i went grocery shopping. we had sandwiches, chips, and lemonade like we were at a picnic for dinner while we watched sopranos and big love. the young wife of the prophet gets my vote for creepiest character on tv.
OMIGOD! so i just went over to the imdb to get a picture of her to post, and found out that she’s the little girl from the ring!! double creepy!!
i totally forgot untill just now…we’re going to see jamie cullum tonight at the kimmell center! yay! mark went and saw him a few weeks ago when he was in denver, and has been raving about his opening act, brandi carlysle. he played me her stuff and it’s beautiful.
ok, does anyone else have this pet peeve? i really hate it when people pluralize names of places for no reason. like, for instance, a restaurant…let’s say…chakra. "so i went to chakra’s for dinner last night, it was SO GOOD!" why? why, people? you mean you went to chakra’s dining room? or you went to CHAKRA? GOSH. IDIOTS!

much action, good and bad, in the past week. i went to north jersey last monday to stay with my best friend for a couple of weeks as there were several auditions in nyc i wanted to hit. i hate staying with my parents, although i enjoy seeing them. so, i stayed with mike and ilana. the auditions went well…i sang for the first time in a long time in a professional audition setting, and it went AMAZINGLY. the woman who went after me said, "that sounded great! wow!" as i was walking out, and i literally started crying. it was such a great feeling to be back, y’know? and to be validated. after being scared that i would maybe never sing again at the level i once did. so yeah, that was nice. i read for some non-musicals, too, and felt really good. i have several appointments coming up, many in philly, so i’m excited about what may be to come!
on saturday night, i performed and co-hosted the miss bergen county area pageant. it was a total last minute deal, but i’m glad i did it, it’s always fun. my friend elise has been running this pageant forever, and i’m always glad to help out as a has-been, er, "former". elise’s daughter, ashley, who i have known since she was in the womb, is now 17 and just an incredible young woman. she tried competing this year but said it wasn’t for her, so she just performed at this pageant like she usually does. she’s been writing her own music for a few years now, and it has really blossomed and matured…she did a song with her acoustic guitar that was just beautiful. i’m sure she gets embarrassed because i’m always telling her how proud i am of her, but i can’t help it, she’s like my little sister!
mike and ilana had a party saturday night, so mark drove up for that and got us a hotel room for the night. it was so nice; the westin in morristown was re-done a couple of years ago and it’s AWESOME. we got the presidential suite, took bubble baths, ate a leisurely room-service breakfast, and just unwinded. vacation in morristown, woo-hoo!
now the bad…i won’t get into details, partly because it would take a long time, but ilana and i are no longer friends. we had a huge fight that spiraled from something minor into a big ugly mess. she was completely irrational to the point where i literally couldn’t get a word in edgewise, and she was saying things that didn’t even make sense. it’s hard to lose your best friend, but i realized that i’ve been putting up with stuff that i shouldn’t have to, and i’ve also justified some despicable behavior of hers in the past. i won’t do it anymore. my true "best friends" have always been my husband, my sister, jess, bethany, paul, jack, and all the other wonderful friends in my life who don’t require the kind of compromises that she did.
speaking of bethany, i hung out with her the other night in the city, which was fun. i miss her…we’ll have to do it more often. also, my beautifully pregnant friend andi will be back in town this weekend, and i can’t wait to see her.
i power-voted for kevin and elliot last night. well, not really, i only got through a couple of times, but i tried. come on boys!! i still love watching the show despite having to stomach ryan seacreast and paula abdul. my prediction for final three is…chris, taylor, and one of the girls in third place, maybe paris or mandisa? katharine? we shall see, but mark my words, a boy is winning this year. anyone watching apprentice this season? it’s not as bad as i thought it would be. just when i think trump can’t get any more ridiculous, he does something to redeem himself. anyway, i’m liking this season so far. haven’t really gotten into the race yet, although i’ve been watching. survivor is okay. the new surreal life seems funny. intervention always rules. and that is your reality tv rundown, by kelley. obviously i’m watching and loving sopranos and big love, too. if you don’t have hbo, you don’t know what you’re missing. this paragraph was brought to you courtesy of tivo.
my newest addiction is bottled starbucks frappucinos in the morning. i don’t like the blended ones, just the regular coffee flavored ones in the bottle. yum. just enough caffiene to get me going, but not enough to crack me out. and honest tea peach oohlong is great, too.
tomkat are due to give birth to their alien baby any day now! how exciting! stay tuned for details.

i quit my job.
HAAAAALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! HALLELUJAH! i will miss everyone immensely, especially my gm, who was really sad to see me go, but there was one manager who i could no longer deal with. i was planning on giving my notice in a few weeks anyway, but this idiot gave me an excuse to do it earlier. so i quit on the spot last night and walked out. i explained why i had to do it to my gm, who was nothing but kind and gracious about it. he offered me help finding a new job, but he also told me he thought this was a good decision for me based on my career, and that i should just focus on that. he is right. sayonara, continental…we’ve had good times, we’ve had bad times, and i will miss you, but what i am most looking forward to…is burning those goddam striped shirts so i never have too see (or smell) them again.
my singing voice is feeling better and better every day. i met with a great voice teacher on wednesday who i will be working with starting in a couple of weeks. he seems confident that the process of re-training my voice should be relatively quick and easy, and soon i’ll just be maintaining. he was a cool guy…he had a bit of a snooty/haughty attitude on the phone, but when we met, he was cool. we talked about american idol for, like, a good 20 minutes (we both watch religiously), and he said his students say he reminds them of simon. anyway, he seems to know what he’s doing, so i’m excited to start working with him.
i’ll be in nyc for the next two week auditioning my butt off. it’s high season right now, and i reeeeeally want a job for the summer, so we shall see. i’m going in for a bunch of musicals, but i’m actually hoping to land a shakespeare season. it’s hard to get cast when you only have one classical production on your resume, and it was in college, AND it wasn’t a lead role, but it’s what i want most, and i need to start somewhere. at this point, i would do a non-paying shakespeare gig just to get it on my resume and get that experience. cast me cast me cast me!
also, i think i got a job with a wedding band. it’s part of the biggest entertainment company in philly (they have their own building with rehearsal and recording studios), so i know the $$$ will be good. hey, if i’m gonna have a part-time job, it might as well be singing.
so i read this very long article in rolling stone the other day about scientology–it’s crazier than you’d even think. i am now officially convinced that tom cruise is officially crazy. you gotta read it. it’s nuts.
i’m loving this weather! it’s so nice to grab an iced mocha from the coffee shop and take walter to the dog run for as long as he wants to stay. i am such a warm weather person. maybe we should move to l.a. hmmm…..

the news is blowing my MIND today.
first of all, dana reeve died. i knew she had lung cancer, but it was still a shock. 44 years old, never smoked. her poor son is now without a mother or a father, just their incredible legacies. so, so sad.
secondly, the abortion ban was signed into legislature in south dakota today. that’s correct, you read it right…the governor of south dakota BANNED ABORTION TODAY. now, this could take years to go into effect based on all the legal red tape, but holy f’in shite. this country is being run by a bunch of posturing holy rollers, and it’s scary.
third, a family of quadrupeds was found in turkey. two parents and three children who walk on all fours. and they’re all retarded. i couldn’t quite gather from the article whether or not they actually look any different from you or i (i’m assuming you all walk upright), but yes…they walk on all fours. yep.
and last, but certainly not least, yanni was arrested for domestic battery.
